Prior to that he served in the United States Marine Corps and as a jailer and reserve deputy in Mills County, Iowa. Hernandez has worked in several areas of law enforcement (traffic enforcement, accident reconstruction, undercover operations, criminal investigations, and school resource officer) and has been an instructor in various areas. Hernandez is certified in adult and juvenile CIT and is a Force Science De-escalation Instructor. He became a full-time negotiator with Council Bluffs Police in 2017.
